Lower Back Pain Chiropractor Poway, CA

Chiropractic adjustments, also known as spinal manipulation or chiropractic manipulative therapy, are techniques used by chiropractors to restore proper alignment, mobility, and improved communication to the nervous system, since the spine protects this vital system. Vertebral subluxations, areas in the spine that are stuck and misaligned, causing dysfunction and negatively affecting overall health. Vertebral subluxations are oftentimes the most common cause of aches and pains that never go away despite regular stretching, massage, exercise or over the counter medication. Vertebral subluxations can cause various issues such as: lower back pain, sciatica, hip pain, neck pain, headaches, numbness/tingling, shoulder pain, middle back pain, digestive challenges, dizziness, and jaw pain (TMJ).

Chiropractic Manipulative Therapy Works

Here’s how it typically works:

Chiropractors start by assessing the patient’s spine, posture, and overall musculoskeletal health. They may use various diagnostic tools, including physical examination, medical history, and most times require imaging studies like X-rays or MRI scans.

Identifying Subluxations

Chiropractors often focus on identifying subluxations, which are misalignments or restricted movements of vertebrae in the spine. These subluxations can put pressure on nerves, leading to pain, discomfort, or dysfunction in various parts of the body.

Adjustment Techniques

Chiropractors use their hands or specialized instruments to apply controlled force to specific joints, particularly those in the spine. The goal is to restore proper alignment, improve joint mobility, and relieve pressure on surrounding tissues and nerves.

Types of Adjustments

There are various techniques used in chiropractic adjustments, including:

  • Diversified Technique: This is the most common method, involving a quick, low-amplitude thrust to the affected joint.
  • Gonstead Technique: Focuses on using a specific adjustment approach based on X-ray analysis and palpation.
  • Activator Method: Uses a handheld instrument to deliver a gentle impulse to the spine.
  • Flexion-Distraction Technique: Involves gentle stretching of the spine using a specialized table.
  • Thompson Drop Technique: Uses a special table with sections that drop slightly as the adjustment is made.
  • Spinal Mobilization: Involves gentle stretching and movement of the spine without the application of forceful thrusts.

Chiropractic adjustments provide several benefits, including:

  • Pain relief, particularly for back pain, neck pain, and headaches.
  • Improved joint mobility and function.
